Beyond the Visions of Life
The story
with this demo is identical: these three songs come from “Forever Gone” tape
officially released in Poland. In this case “Forever Gone”, “Depression” and
the title track will occur on immortal debut album of the band. “Visions” was
recorded in the same studio, with the same producer (T. Skogsberg) and only
intensified bass lines show that this is another session time. What about
quality of the songs? As compared to the killing “Death Unfolds” – there is
nothing new to write about! This deathly level created on the previous work is
maintained by the same mighty means. In corroboration of my words, just listen
to the opening song “Forever Gone”. Its excellent beginning is exactly the base
of whole song – it makes “Forever Gone” one of the best death metal killer I
have ever heard. Words can’t describe such feelings in perfect way, but
listening to this fragment is like a journey to my youth, when I was starting
to meet Desultory. This astonishing guitar introduction is left behind, so
musicians offer ‘proper’ cannonade of death metal tunes based on powerful riffs.
Once again a great solo lead made by Stefan is a decoration of the material. I
think he is a special kind of guitarist, his playing has one decisive advantage
and value: he can really absorb the listener attention during the whole
performance. So, the first track ends,
and the new hero enter the stage. His name: “Depression”. Here I can
distinguish all the guitar work and of course solo lead which is divided into several
parts. In turn the last title song emanates superb guitar harmonies, and to put
it simply, I can just say that this is perfectly written song: passion, metal,
two remarkable (as always!) solo leads and close union of riffs and lyrics.
After releasing
“Death Unfolds” demo, “Visions” is next living evidence that new metal machine
was born on the Swedish land. Unfortunately I wasn’t growing with the band
because my adventure with metal music has started since 1991, and what is more,
“Into Eternity” debut album was the first offering from these Swedes, in
addition it was an unoriginal tape with incorrect order of the songs (yes man,
it’s Poland…). The tape which I mentioned on the start arrived to me in the
middle of the 90s, and it has an undisputed cult status in my collection. Right
now I can speak courageously that Desultory is the best outfit coming from the
land of Sweden, of course their third album was a fatal mistake, then they
split up, but the reunion, fortunately, is the real come back to these days of
Swedish death metal glory. Sadly there is too much of silence from the
Desultory headquarters, I hope the band will tell another parts of incredible
“Counting Our Scars” album…
